Interview

To make a start, we would like to take a look back: How did you come together as a Hip-Hop Duo?

DJ Spinna: Krym and I have been friends since our mid teens. I actually knew his younger brother first. He introduced us to each other in the form of a
pop locking battle. Krym was way nicer than me and won, lol. but it solidified a bond and our mutual admiration for hip hop.

Kryminul: We came together as a Hip-Hop dou from growing up on the same block. Spinna was dj-ing from a young age and had another group that dismantled so me being a novice emcee and pop locker we decided to form a new group and it started from there.

Your new Jigmastas LP is entitled „Resurgence“. What’s the reason for the title? Please tell us a bit about it.

DJ Spinna: We have never stopped working on music. We just felt it was time to come back out. Hip Hop is in now in a twenty year cycle, and what’s old is new again. There’s a younger generation that didn’t experience the boom bap of the nineties and we are here to give it them, plus reconnect with our
existing fans. I travel to many places in the world and the one question I get asked the most is what happened to the Jigmastas? Will we ever release new material? The time is now. There’s a void for classic New York „sounding“ Hip Hop.

Kryminul: Resurgence is just simply what we are doing right now for people that haven’t seen or heard us in while we’re just rising from the underworld coming to the surface and also it’s a resurgence of our classic Hip-Hop sound seasoned.

How was it working together on the new LP? What’s the recording process like when you’re in the studio?

DJ Spinna: These days the process is remote. I’ll send Krym a batch of beats to vibe out on. We’ll discuss concept and direction per beat then get together to record. Back in the days we had more time to build tracks from scratch in the studio but being grown men with families and responsibilities it’s gotten difficult to work in that capacity. For this new record it’s a combination of material we’ve been sitting on for over a decade and tracks that were recorded in the past few years. The most current creations on the project are the interludes, intro and outro beats. Also, the beat for God and the Heathen featuring Skam2 and Shadowman
was revamped at the last minute due to fear of sample clearance issues. These got done literally right before the deadline.

Kryminul: Working together on the album was great. It’s pretty easy going we bounce a lot of ideas off of each other, so some of these songs go through drafts before completed to both our liking. Meaning for the most part we record in stages from selecting samples or instruments then coming up with concepts and start the writing process to eventually recording vocals. Sometimes I’ll write a song and then music is created around what’s written.

Which song do you like the most? Is there a special song you can share us a special memory?

DJ Spinna: My favorite track.. I love them all! I guess The Resurge still resonates with me quite heavy. It’s probably the deepest song on the project beatwise and lyrically.

Kryminul: I can’t really say I have just one favorite song and as to a special memory… we were working on the track „too ill“ and we played it for another artist Shabaam Sahdeeq a friend ours and he was feeling it so much that he told us „yo I’m gettin on this track I’m writing a hook right now“ which was a compliment for us that he thought it was so special he wanted to be a part of it.

Please share us an anecdote about your time working together.

DJ Spinna: The anecdote is being honest with each other and making music we feel is timeless. It’s a creative cohesion that comes from years of brotherhood and life experiences.

Kryminul: I just think when like minds are aligned we’ll always do great things together no matter what field or genre of life you find your self in. We will always put our heart and soul in the music we create.
